Reflecting on a Transformative Year:
2022-2023 marked a significant year for the Clinical TMS Society (CTMSS) with Dr. Mohamed Abdelghani at its helm.
Being the first president elected from outside the USA, Dr. Abdelghani’s tenure was filled with milestones, achievements, and growth opportunities in the field of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).
During his presidency, the society’s membership surpassed 1,000 members from 37 countries worldwide.
In May 2022, Dr. Abdelghani was officially inaugurated as the president of the CTMSS during the 10th Annual Meeting in Chicago, marking a milestone in his career.
On his first day as president, the new administration, under his leadership, held its inaugural Board of Directors (BOD) meeting in Chicago.
Dr. Abdelghani formed three special committees, namely the Identity Committee, Structure Committee, and Foundation Committee, to address pressing challenges facing the CTMSS.
Alongside the 11 standing committees, these three committees produced exceptional work with a significant impact on the society and the TMS field for years to come.
Over the past few years, Dr. Abdelghani actively participated in several successful Pulses TMS courses.
Pulses is a TMS certificate course organized multiple times each year by the CTMSS.
During his presidency, Pulses courses were held in Sonoma (USA), Colorado Springs (USA), and Melbourne (Australia), with the latter being the first Pulses course in the southern hemisphere.
The increasing number of attendees reflects the growing interest and exponential growth of the TMS field. The final Pulses course organized during his presidency took place in Colorado Springs, two days before the society’s annual meeting and had 140 attendees.
Speaking about the Pulses TMS course, Dr. Abdelghani said, “It is a great honor to be a part of the faculty of what has become the most widely attended TMS course worldwide.” He added, “We are working on plans to expand our reach to countries we have not yet visited.”
His presidency officially concluded after he led the Members’ Annual Meeting held in Colorado Springs as part of the 11th Annual Meeting of the CTMSS, which attracted over 600 participants.
During this event, Dr. Abdelghani announced and presented the four winners of the 2023 CTMSS awards: Dr. Robert Sammons received The Legacy Award (established by Dr. Abdelghani), Dr. Martha Koo received the President’s Award, Dr. Richard Pitch received the Service Award, and Dr. Leo Chen received The Outstanding Early Career Award.
Dr. Abdelghani acknowledged the invaluable contributions of these outstanding clinicians and scientists who volunteer their time in different leadership positions within the society.
On the second day of the Annual Meeting, the CTMSS hosted its annual Gala Dinner. During the event, Dr. Abdelghani presided over the induction of 11 new fellows.
He also honored three pioneers of TMS with the newly established CTMSS Medal of Honor. These three pioneers were Prof. Anthony Barker (inventor of the first TMS device)
Dr. Mark George (first psychiatrist to use TMS for depression treatment)
Prof. John Rothwell (whose groundbreaking research has significantly advanced our understanding of TMS mechanisms and therapeutic potential)
At the conclusion of the Members’ Annual Meeting in May 2023, Dr. Abdelghani handed over the presidency to his successor, Dr. Rebecca Allen.
In his speech, he expressed gratitude to all members of the BOD, acknowledging their dedication, teamwork, and countless volunteer hours that contributed to the achievements during his presidency.
Dr. Abdelghani expressed confidence in leaving the society stronger and better prepared for future growth.
His presidency saw the CTMSS reach new heights, making a significant impact on the field of TMS.
Dr. Abdelghani looks forward to continuing as an active member of the CTMSS Board of Directors and as the Immediate Past President of the society for the next year.
